Socialt Rum og Symbolsk Rum

by Pierre Bourdieu
Af Praktiske Grunde Omkring Teorien om Menneskelig Handlen (1997)

Abstract

This translated introduction spells out clearer than usual what is at stake in Bourdieus theory and he explicitly acknowledges that the theory he is constructing is meant to elucidate the general workings of social space in between objective and subjective structures. They are ideal theories that group people in accordance with their capital and habitus. It thus becomes clear that in spite of Connerton's insistence on incorporation which does not at all seem so different from Bourdieu's practice it is exactly the structural kind of analysis that Bourdieu makes which the former seeks to avoid. For Bourdieu the individual is merely the vehicle of certain dispositions, possible positionings and objective social positions. All forces are external but come to be manifested through individual practice. And as usual a lot of ingullible theoretical jargon with little relevance once the theory has been more or less understood.
