The development of software for the teaching of any discipline involves a number of interesting problems. The solution to these problems, from our survey of the literature, seems at best only to be partial. This paper is a contribution towards such solutions. A number of important concepts and definitions are carefully stated in an original format and the general questions of robustness, portability, and other features of reliable software are addressed with definitive examples. © 1988.
