Reflecting on the relationships between geography and the disciplines of history and archaeology, this commentary on Lilley's (2011) article questions a 'periodised' view of the world. Thinking through the nature of these disciplinary relations, and on notions of temporal scale, therefore, this short article seeks to make space for how geographers can engage with 'medieval subject matters' in new ways. © The Author(s) 2011.
