This contribution illustrates the main research projects implemented by the Laboratory of Archaeological Computing (LIA) at the University of Salento (Lecce, Italy) in the field of computer application to archaeology. This activity started in 1983 with the first excavation data management system. Further developments are linked with the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in the field of settlement studies and, more recently, with the implementation of two Web-based applications, which represent online versions of the older systems. The article also presents the results of a research project, the LandLab Project, in the field of multimedia communication.
