Abstract

Motivated by the maritime IoT applications and requirements presented in the previous chapter, this chapter identifies and addresses the commonalities and differences of these applications and requirements and introduces a maritime MTC system architecture comprising three types of communication networks tailored to the various service requirements and the unique maritime IoT deployment environments. We shall examine the distinct characteristics of this envisioned hybrid maritime MTC system and explain how it differentiates itself from its land counterparts. This chapter lays out an architectural foundation that leads to an ultimate solution to the maritime IoT requirements and challenges.
