Abstract

In the century of anxiety, more and more anxiety patients visit their general practitioners. The author found, with a questionnaire-based examination, that 50% of the patients 60 yrs old and younger had pathological anxiety symptoms and 15% of the patients reported sudden attacks in a 1-year period. In the last 5 years, 22 severe anxiety patients were seen by a specialist, of these 17 belonged to his own praxis. One received medical treatment, 21 took part in a cognitive-behavior therapy program. The panic attacks disappeared in all patients, 8 had less severe anxiety symptoms, and 5 needed further treatment by a specialist. The author suggests special anxiety outpatient clinics for more effective medical treatment of severe anxiety patients. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)
