Abstract

ExxonMobil has a strong commitment to the sustainability of its activities. It is an area the company has been working on for a long time -- since before 1987, when the World Commission on Environment and Development created the most commonly used definition of sustainability. The company regards the sustainability of its operations in two main areas: improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions; and the role the company's products can play. There are many examples of chemical products that help tackle global challenges such as climate change, including insulation materials to reduce emissions. The industry has plenty more to achieve in terms of improving its sustainability, and many developments are anticipated in the next 10 years, even in long-standing processes such as steam cracking. The needs of the public must not be forgotten as chemical companies strive to improve their sustainability.
