Thallium (CASRN 7440-28-0) was discovered by Sir William Crookes in 1861. It is a toxic metal that is used in the semiconductor industry, optical systems, and photoelectric cells. Thallium and thallium compounds are generally water soluble. Humans may be exposed to thallium by ingestion, inhalation, or dermal absorption. Thallium has caused both acute and chronic poisoning as a result of unintentional ingestion, which could lead to fatalities.
