Abstract

At the completion of this instructive module the student should be able to: interpret the physical significance of terms in the equations of change for a problem with simultaneous energy, mass and momentum transfer; simplify the equations of change, given a set of assumptions; adapt to other chemical engineering design problems the procedure described here of combining both theory and experiment to obtain practical design and operating procedures; optimize the separation in a thermal diffusion column under static or no-flow conditions; and optimize the separation in a thermal diffusion column for a net flow through the column.
