Abstract

An attempt to calculate the MSUP2 constituent of the tide on the north-west European continental shelf using a numerical sea model is described, and detailed comparisons between the computed results and tidal constants obtained from observations are given. Residual currents, generated within the system by non-linear terms in the governing equations, are examined in relation to the observed circulation. Estimates of tidal dissipation and energy flux are derived from the numerical solutions, providing a picture of the energy balance of the shelf. (A)
