This book contains basic and necessary information to easily understand the concepts and principles of Aquatic Ecotoxicology, describing in a rather didactic and objective way the application of this science with a view not only to the diagnosis of environmental quality but also to the prediction of environmental impacts. This work brings together the experience of 21 Brazilian specialists from universities, private companies and environmental agencies, each transmitting specific knowledge of its area of expertise. These professionals, recognized nationally and internationally, discuss in 18 different chapters the history and evolution of this science in the world, the introduction and destination of chemical agents in the environment, principles and terminology used in this science, as well as the ways of applying the results of ecotoxicological tests in the control of water pollution. The selection and cultivation of aquatic organisms, the ecotoxicological tests routinely used in continental / marine waters and sediments, the comparison between laboratory results and field results, the basis of the statistical analyzes employed, the control of the analytical quality of ecotoxicological tests, mechanisms of action and biochemical tests, bioaccumulation and biodegradation of substances, environmental mutagenicity, the problem of toxic algae. The topics related to the monitoring and evaluation of ecotoxicological risks are demonstrated with practical examples, as well as in the evaluation of environmental hazard.
