Abstract

A microstrip gas chamber (MSGC) with a semi-transparent CsI photon converter for the detection of single VUV photons is described. The detector is sensitive to photons in the wavelength region 160 nm < λ < 220 nm and is operated with Ar-C4H10, (90-10) as detector gas at p = 1000 mbar with a gain g ≃ 3 × 104. The back electrode of the MSGC is formed by a pad array allowing for two-dimensional position determination of the incident photon. For single VUV photons at λ ≃ 172 nm a detection efficiency εtol ≃ 9% with anode readout and εtot ≃ 3.5% with pad readout could be achieved.
