Vision and behavior in an African cichlid fish

by R D Fernald
American Scientist (1984)

Abstract

Presents information gathered from experiments designed to study the behavioral ecology of the African cichlid fish (Haplochromis burtoni) and to understand the machinery of the CNS that is responsible for vision. The eye of the African cichlid enlarges enormously during its lifetime, and the functional adaptations are examined in terms of 3 critical properties of the eye that must be conserved during growth: visual acuity, visual sensitivity in dim light, and the focusing and resolving power of the lens.
