Abstract

The article focuses on the medicinal properties of Vitex agnus-castus. It notes that the purple-black berries of Vitex contain flavonoids, essential oils, diterpenes and glycosides. It details studies that provide evidence that Vitex can treat menstrual cycle irregularities, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and mastalgia. Some side effects associated with Vitex extracts are gastrointestinal upset, headache and nausea. It notes that the use of Vitex is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
