The general theory for this monograph is presented in this chapter. We state the Navier–Stokes equations for unsteady compressible vicsous flows in unbounded two- or three-dimensional space and specify the initial data and far-field behavior. A number of fundamental properties or integral invariants of the flow fields are derived. These invariants shall be employed to refine the analytical description of the far-field behavior and to verify the accuracy of numerical solutions.
