Twentieth-century researchers responded to the need to produce a 'plastic' building material based on concrete. In the twenty-first century the search should be for potentially superior building technologies that are less burdensome on the environment. The destruction of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, USA in 2001 calls into question some current construction practices. Integration of construction teaching, alongside theory and design, is overdue. This leads to the question, 'where to from here?'.
