Abstract

There are few occasions in life where one gets the opportunity to work with someone that actually blazes new trails. Working with Dr Tony Dubendorf over the past couple of years has afforded me an opportunity to understand the world of wireless communications better than my previous 20-odd years of experience in the IT and networking world. Tony exhibits more than just a grasp and mastery of the material related to wireless communications and wireless security. He exudes wireless in every professional act that he performs. His thoughts are always centered on how to improve communications or data security or packet transmission or something related to wireless communications. I admit that I have had a serious conflict in my career between work and fun – being in IT for so long does that to folks. However, I have not even approached the level of understanding in wireless communications that Tony exhibits. Now, to see this information put in a book that is well constructed, well written, and full of information related to wireless history and wireless technological developments of late, I am excited to recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the new medium of communications for the future. It is always good when someone with such expertise attempts to convey what he or she knows to others in order to benefit the greater society of technologists. Tony has done just that. He has written a book that takes the reader from the very fundamental aspects of the history of networking and wireless to the latest advances in the field in a gradual, methodical progression of building blocks. This approach allows the reader to stay focused on each particular topic and understand what is read without having to refer back to previous sections for clarification. His masterful explanations make short work of these topics and I can only say that the book is much better than most textbooks I have come across in my time. For any student or technologist wanting to get a clear, concise, and well-rounded explanation of what wireless means in today’s communications world, I would heartily recommend reading this book. It is destined to be a ‘shelf-reference’ we
