XtratuM hypervisor XtratuM design for LEON architecture

by M Masmano, I Ripoll, A Crespo
October (2008)

Abstract

This paper describes the porting of the XtratuM 2.0 to the LEON2 processor. The original XtratuM functionality has also been adapted to meet the specific requirements for spatial systems. Implementing and hypervisor is a challenging task, specially if the underlying processor was not designed to support virtualization. As far as we know, XtratuM 2.0 is the first hypervisor for the Sparc V8 processor. Sun Microsystems developed the UltraSPARC T1 based on the UltraSPARC Architecture 2005 spec- ification, which provides hardware support for virtualization; but this features are not available in LEON2. This work has focused on how to virtualize the LEON2 processor. The functionality that requires virtualization or special hypervisor attention has been identified and para-virtuazed services has been designed and implemented to replace the native ones.
