The Opportunity:

We are seeking two Research Assistants to join the Garnett Group's Screening Team.

The Role:

As a Research Assistant you will work collaboratively as part of a team to perform CRISPR and drug sensitivity screens at scale. You will be responsible for the routine maintenance of cancer cell models from many cancer types and tissues, this will involve culturing both established cell lines and newly derived 3D cancer organoids. Additionally, you will assist in the everyday running of the laboratory and support assay development.

The Group:

Data generated by the Screening Team is used by the Garnett Group and the Cancer Dependency Map at Sanger to better understand the consequences of alterations in the DNA of cancer cells. Vulnerabilities identified can then be exploited as novel drug targets or as genetic markers to deliver personalised medicine to patients in the clinic.

Essential Skills

  • Degree in Biological Sciences or relevant laboratory experience.
  • Ability to follow instructions and protocols accurately.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good attention to detail and record keeping.
  • Computer literate, experience using MS Excel.

Ideal Skills

  • Experience working within a research or industry laboratory.
  • Understanding of cell and molecular biology techniques relevant to the role including cell culture, CRISPR, DNA extraction and PCR.
  • Experience using laboratory information management systems.
  • Experience operating liquid-handling robotics.

Other information

Work Pattern:

One of the two roles requires routine Saturday working. This is permanent and will replace one standard Mon-Fri working day, for example, the working week would run Tuesday-Saturday.
