Potential future openings (Fall 2020) would be in the following areas:
- Area 1: Catalyst development for water splitting. Electrochemically catalyzing water splitting has attracted intensive research attentions due to its promising potential for sustainable production of hydrogen fuel from water. We recently propose a new electrochemical-chemical involved OER mechanism in which the bulk of the solid catalyst participates to the stabilization of the catalyst, by triggering a chemical oxidation process accompany with cation diffusion in and out of the phase. There are plenty of ongoing investigation for this project. We are looking for postdoc candidates who are experienced with electrocatalysis, nanomaterial synthesis and characterizations.
Area 2: In-situ electrochemical Raman Spectroscopy. In situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy is capable of probing electron transfer processes under electrochemical condition by monitoring local structure and reactivity properties of solid/liquid interfaces. Therefore, in situ Raman spectroscopy is now recognized as one of the powerful surface characterization techniques for the investigation of the fundamental and application studies of electrocatalysis and Li-ion batteries. The postdoc candidate will work on in-situ experiments on electrochemically prepared metal hydroxide thin films for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea electro-oxidation. The candidate will exploit the technique of Raman spectroelectrochemistry to obtain information about the formation of active species/intermediates, the reaction kinetics during Faradaicreactions on catalyst surface.
Area 3: In situ analysis of gas generation in Li ion battery. Monitoring the gas evolution during charge and discharge in Li-ion batteries is significant for the electrode material and electrolyte development. We have a project collaborating with a research group in Hong Kong Polytechnic University to leverage our online electrochemical mass spectrometer (OEMS) and expertise in the electrode/electrolyte development for Li ion and Na/K ion batteries. We are looking for a postdoc who will set up this program in our lab. The candidate is expected to build prototype testing devices for state-of-the-art Li ion batteries, as well as developing new strategies to improve them. Experience with Li ion batteries is required.
Area 4: Electrochemical gas sensors. The objective is to develop new sensitive layers based on oxide thin films that can be integrated into gas micro-sensors for outdoor air quality. We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate with a background in sensor science to develop a new generation of gas sensors for monitoring nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) gases in air pollution. Experience in the study of thin film layers for gas sensors will be preferred (especially MOx sensor knowledge and gas sensing experiments by using electrical measurements under controlled temperature and atmosphere). The postdoc candidate will carry out the analysis and characterization of structures (GXRD, Raman), microstructures (AFM, MEB and TEM microscopy, BET surface measurement) and electrical properties (4-point measurements, resistivity measurement under gas) of thin films.
- Conduct a specified program of research under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator.
Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which he/she is engaged with the assistance of and under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. We are looking for a dynamic person who has demonstrated his/her ability to carry out research work and write publications independently.
Assist the broader team of researchers comprising undergraduate students, master students, and early-stage PhD students.
Protect inventions and assist in the filing of patent applications under the guidance of the Principal Investigator.
Engage in appropriate training and development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, the School, or the University.
We offer a competitive gross salary of 220,000~280,000 RMB/year (which is equivalent to a net salary of around 30,000~40,000 $/year), and excellent working conditions in China.
