### Summary

This position is being filled under the Expedited Hiring Authority for Shortage Category and/or Critical Need Health Care Occupations.

**About the Position:**

This position is located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, is proud to provide safe, quality care to our military service members, their families, veterans and civilian emergency patients as the most robust and productive healthcare organization within the Military Health System (MHS). Both inpatient and outpatient services are provided by approximately 8,500 staff members, including active duty military personnel from each of our uniformed services, Public Health personnel, federal civilians, contract employees, and volunteers. Fort Sam Houston is located in San Antonio, the second largest metropolitan area in Texas with a warm climate and close proximity to beaches. With its combination of art galleries, distinctive shops and fine dining experiences in a historically significant setting, the San Antonio River Walk, also known as the Paseo del Rio, comprises a network of walkways on the banks of the San Antonio River. Located underneath downtown San Antonio, this area contains shops, restaurants and other entertainment options.

### Responsibilities

As a Dental Assistant, you will perform duties such as:

* Assist the oral surgeon in the hospital operating room in a variety of complex oral maxillofacial procedures that involve lengthy, delicate surgery such as malignant growths, correction of congenital anomalies including cleft palates, prognathism, and traumatic injuries that require mandibular ramus surgery (reconstruction of lower jaw), osseointegrated impants, and other conditions which impair respiratory and masticatory functioning.
* Prepare and place surgical dressings, remove contaminated instruments, and cut sutures on direction.
* Operate dental X-ray equipment to take intra and extra-oral radiographs.
* Obtain and record related medical history of patient, and route patient for medical tests and services when required.
* Perform a variety of scrub duties in preparation for intraoral and extraoral procedures.

* A pre-placement medical examination is required.
* Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
* All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA). Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
* Position requires employee to wear a uniform and/or protective clothing.

### Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document.

Radiology Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements:

(1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.

(2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence, as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Experience Required: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: assisting an oral surgeon in routine procedures, operate dental x-ray equipment, Prepares patients for IV sedation; and assisting with complex oral maxillofacial procedures such as malignant growths, correction of congenital anomalies including cleft palates, prognathism, and traumatic injuries that require mandibular ramus surgery (reconstruction of lower jaw). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-05.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:

Education: Successful completion of at least one half year (9 semester hours) of graduate-level education progressing toward a master's or higher degree from an accredited college or university in Dental Hygiene, Dentistry, or related field of study.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify.
