Project Description:

Most of the existing infrastructure and building stock was designed according to old standards using poor material and construction practices. The vulnerability of these structures to natural and man-made hazards is increased further considering the level of deterioration of the structural elements due to ageing and aggressive environmental conditions. Recent events worldwide have illustrated forcefully the catastrophic implications of degradation to civil engineering structures. There is no doubt that there is a global need for sustainable and resilient buildings and infrastructure due to climate change and increased societal exposure to natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis and floods. Retrofitting for enhancing the performance and extending the service-life of deteriorated and deficient structures with quantified sustainability is the only viable solution. This project aims to investigate the efficiency of various innovative retrofitting solutions (e.g. FRCM) in alleviating the deficiencies of old substandard reinforced concrete members. Both analytical and experimental investigation will be carried out.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a 1 st class or 2.1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in Civil Engineering. An MSc in Structural Engineering is required. Experience on structural engineering analysis software and laboratory testing would be advantageous.

If English is not candidate's first language, he/she must provide evidence that he/she meets the University's minimum English Language requirements .

Due to funding restrictions this position is only available for UK or EU candidates.

Studentship Information

The position is available to start in December, February, April or June (subject to date of application)

This project will include the payment of tuition fees as well as a stipend equivalent to RCUK rates (currently at £15,009 p.a. tax free for 2019/20) awarded to the suitable candidate.

Duration is 3 years.
