Job description Job summary
Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London. The position is funded by Richard Thomas' Royal Society research professorship, and will involve the study of enumerative invariants in algebraic geometry and gauge theory.
Duties and responsibilities
Depending on the tastes and expertise of the successful candidate the project can be a mix of calculation or development of new theory based around counting of coherent sheaves in dimensions 2, 3 and 4. Techniques such as deformation theory, derived categories, wall-crossing, localisation and K-theoretic invariants will play a role.
Essential requirements
You must hold a PhD or equivalent level of professional qualifications and/or experience in algebraic geometry or closely related fields.

You must also meet the following criteria:
  • Experience in algebraic geometry or closely related fields
  • Original research results in algebraic geometry, geometric representation theory or theoretical high energy physics, commensurate with career stage
  • A broad and strong background in geometry
  • Experience in carrying out research of high quality, independently and/or in a team, evidenced by publications of high quality
  • Ability to carry out original research and to produce published research papers
  • Ability to exercise initiative and judgement in carrying out research tasks

Further information
The position is fixed term for 36 months. The expected start date is 1 September or soon thereafter.

Maximum Salary on Appointment £40,215 per annum.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range, £35,477- £38,566 per annum.
