The Faculty of Health Education and Life Sciences in Birmingham City University is seeking an exceptional candidate to lead the continued development of our academic sports provision following a period of unprecedented growth and development. Birmingham City University invested £41 Million in a purpose-built development designed to house a new Sports and Life Sciences provision and a relocated School of Education. The 10,500m² building at City South Campus in Edgbaston has enabled the University to offer a wide range of new health, life science and sports courses. The second phase of these developments will see the Department make a key contribution to the Commonwealth Games legacy as we plan to relocate our Sports provision to the stadium site.

To support these developments and lead the second phase of our academic sport and exercise development we are seeking an exceptional candidate to join us as Head of Department. As a key member of the School leadership team, you will be expected to support the Head of School in providing strategic direction and academic leadership for the department in line with the School, Faculty and University priorities. This role offers an exciting opportunity for an academic leader to support the leadership of this growing Department.

Candidates will demonstrate the intellectual, strategic and operational leadership qualities to engage colleagues, students and stakeholders in a strategic direction that develops new opportunities and builds on existing strengths, past successes and enhances the School and Faculty position. The post holder will support the Head of School to lead the core activities of teaching, research and external income generation to build upon our national and international reputation, and to foster a spirit of continuous improvement.

A pplicants must be educated to post-graduate level in a Sport discipline and should have or be working towards a PhD/ Doctorate with a track record of research/scholarly activity with recognition at a national level. Candidates are sought that have the energy, passion and ambition to have a real impact in developing the Department. The post-holder will be strategic leader with evidence of successful academic leadership, a focus on curriculum and business development and able to help build the School's international reputation. The appointee must have a proven track record within the field of sports and exercise science and the ability to lead a growing and highly motivated team of academics and students.
