Are you an experienced physicist with a PHD or equivalent in physics or engineering?

Do you have a background in fusion theory and modelling with extensive internationally recognised experience?

The Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is part of the UK Atomic Energy Authority and is one of the world`s leading fusion research laboratories. Our scientists and engineers are working with partners around the globe to develop fusion as a new source of clean energy for tomorrow`s power stations. We have excellent opportunities to join our team within the Tokamak Science department.

This role will focus on understanding and modelling the theoretical basis for the physics of the pedestal on MAST-U and other tokamaks supported by EUROfusion, including JET and MST1 devices. You will be responsible for running and developing pedestal physics codes and comparing the output with experimental observations.

Further responsibilities will include:

-Extrapolating results to future devices such as STEP, ITER and DEMO
-Playing a leading role in pedestal physics on MAST-U and contributing to the program at a strategic level.
-Help lead pedestal physics research at UKAEA and make high level strategic contributions to the overall science programme.
-Perform pedestal stability analysis and run codes to gain better understanding of the pedestal region on STEP, MAST-U, JET and other tokamaks supported by EUROfusion.
-Develop new codes and modify existing codes to incorporate hitherto-neglected physical processes that may be important for pedestal physics.
-Develop the pedestal physics basis for future machines, in particular STEP, ITER and DEMO.

Knowledge skills and experience

Essential

-Ph.D. or equivalent degree in physics or engineering.
-Extensive experience in the field which is internationally recognised, such as via participation in ITPA groups and/or other international committees.
-Proven ability to lead PhD students and scientists conducting independent research (staff up to level 5), as well as proposing experiments and acting as scientific co-ordinator for high profile experiments.
-Strong record of publications (>10 first author journal publications) ideally including PRLs.
-Proven experience in the delivery of talks at international conferences as well as the ability to produce report results and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
-The post-holder must be a good team-player with an outward facing work-ethos as he/she will work closely with scientists around the world.

Desirable

-Experience with RMP physics or impact of neutrals on the pedestal.
-Record of obtaining external funding through successful grant applications.
-Experience initiating and developing codes for Tokamak plasmas.
