Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to study right in the heart of the city. As part of developing our campuses, STEAMHouse 2 is a £50m new campus development project. The build schedule is due to be completed in Autumn 2021 with further fit-out, exciting technology rich facility compromising academic, innovation and research and commercial spaces. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Architect for a fix period of 2 years. The role will suit an experienced Architect who has technical skills in Infrastructure and Networking.

The role is to support the technology design development process against emerging user requirements and advise-on and shape appropriate technology solutions to deliver the required technologies to support the mixed occupant profile. In addition to work with external providers to integrate and orchestrate their technologies and services into the BCU technology estate as required and maintain confidence and buy-in from stakeholders in consideration of the said technical solutions.

You will be part of our Enterprise Architecture team who are responsible for shaping the future of IT at BCU. Reporting to the Chief Enterprise Architect you will be responsible to ensure that the architecture of our IT systems implement and enable our IT Strategy and Principles.

You will have demonstrable technical expertise as well as experience and knowledge of designing technical architectures and solutions. Whilst you are likely to have in-depth understanding of servers and network infrastructure you will also have broad technical knowledge and experience including Cloud, applications and data. Ideally, you will also have knowledge and experience of appropriate architectural frameworks and methodologies such as TOGAF.

You will have ownership of all technical aspects of the projects that you are assigned to. You will also contribute to developing policies, developing IT strategy, resolving major technical design issues, making procurement decisions and selecting system architecture components.

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent working experience - essential
  • At least 5 years' experience in IT infrastructure and/or network senior role - essential
  • Previous experience as Architect - desirable
  • Experience in designing new IT solution - essential
  • Participate in Procurement and tendering - essential
  • Developing solution design documents - essential
  • Experience of architectural framework such as TOGAF - desirable
