**Position Summary**

The Laboratory Supervisor, Science is responsible for a variety of formalized work leadership duties and skilled technical tasks relative to overseeing and supervising the preparation of classroom student science laboratory exercises, instructor led discipline specific demonstrations, and laboratory safety training materials. The Laboratory Supervisor performs work under their own initiative with limited supervision and is accountable for significant, advanced management duties.

**Duties and Responsibilities**

+ Oversee and supervise various levels of staff to include: coordinating and developing work schedules, prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, ensuring staff is trained and formalizing hiring, termination and disciplinary recommendations for Laboratory Specialists, Laboratory Technicians and Federal Work Study students

+ Supervise and participate with other campus laboratory supervisors in the development, implementation, and monitoring of program goals, objectives, and activities both operationally and financially

+ Manage and plan all aspects of the day-to-day operations of laboratories and provide technical assistance to faculty and staff

+ Research, develop, implement, and manage all aspects of safety training for laboratory staff in accord with Pima Community College Environmental, Health and Safety policies and established practices; advise faculty and staff on safe usage and handling of materials; serve as the Chemical Hygiene Office for the science laboratory at the assigned campus

+ Plan, select, coordinate, and recommend work procedures and facility changes and equipment needs to include researching new products and technology, communicating with outside vendors, and making purchases of both capital and expendable items

+ Evaluate operations and activities for effectiveness and prepare reports related to assigned areas of responsibilities

+ Assist in development of budgets and monitor expenditures to ensure compliance with budgetary guidelines; purchase supplies and equipment; prepare cost estimates and reports; and, prepare and administer laboratory budget

+ Prepare operational cost estimates and provide to just-in-time delivery of goods when prudent; maintain adequate supplies of expendable items to support course lab exercises

+ Other duties are assigned

**Job Requirements**

+ Bachelor's degree in life or physical science related discipline such as Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology or Physics **and**

+ Two years laboratory specialist level experience supplemented by supervisory coursework

**OR**

+ Candidate who possess similar, minimum objective qualifications are encouraged to apply and should describe in detail the work experience and education regarded as establishing the equivalency

**The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:**

+ Supervise, hire, discipline and evaluate laboratory staff

+ Manage laboratory operations with budgetary constraints

+ Applicable college, local, state, and federal laws and regulations

+ Decision making employing critical, reasoning techniques

+ Administer budgets

+ Inventory materials, supplies, and equipment

+ Analytically recognize obstacles and opportunities, develop and rationalize options, collaboratively implement program change

+ Training principles

+ Monitor facility usage relative to cost

+ Prepare reports employing analytical and statistical techniques written in business English

+ Perform scientific laboratory equipment repair and maintenance

+ Intermediate skill level with use of Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint and Word

+ Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor and the general public, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

**Physical Requirements:**

+ Positions in this class typically require: balancing, lifting, climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, grasping and talking

+ Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

+ Incumbents may be subjected to dusts, chemicals, workspace restrictions, heights, and travel.
