    Responsibilities

    The Chief Nurse for Mental Health & Behavioral Sciences/Spinal Cord Injury provides leadership that supports nurses assigned to the inpatient/outpatient Mental Health programs and the Spinal Cord Injury Program to practice to the highest standards to achieve quality care for veteran patients. The Chief Nurse reports directly to the Nurse Executive, however, the position is administratively matrixed with the medical leadership of the two programs, and requires extensive collaboration with program leaders to accomplish program goals. The Chief Nurse is accountable for setting nursing standards of care, managing human resources, budgeting/position management, performance improvement, performance management, and ongoing program improvement. The Chief Nurse supports Nursing Service operations and participates in planning, directing, coordinating nursing services at the the service level. Participates in the development, implementation, and maintenance of the hospital quality improvement program through evaluation of services rendered, quality improvement and regulatory compliance.
    SCOPE: The Chief Nurse has a wide span of control with a 28 bed acute inpatient MH unit, a 54 bed MH-RRTP, outpatient mental health clinic, outpatient substance abuse clinic, MHICM (mental health intensive case management, 27-bed Spinal Cord Unit including outpatient SCI clinic, and SCI home care. The Chief Nurse demonstrates effective leadership and is accountable for ensuring efficiency of operations, improvement of clinical practices, services, and implementation of systems, processes and methods to evaluate and improve safe patient care.

    Work Schedule: Primarily 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday, but must be willing to work other tours when indicated to accomplish program objectives.

    Qualifications
    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship.
    • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
    • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
    Education: Master's degree in Nursing or Master's in related field with BSN or Doctoral degree in Nursing or related field.
    Preferred Experience: Approximately 4-5 years of progressive clinical and leadership experience with demonstrated knowledge and expertise in administration; most recent 3 of the last 4 years of leadership must have been in a direct leadership role in a hospital setting or direct patient care environment.

    Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
    • Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 3-4 years of nursing practice/experience.
    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
