A Postdoctoral Fellowship is available in the lab of Dr. Jonathon Burman, Assistant Professor in the Department of Aging and Geriatric Research at the University of Florida (http://aging.ufl.edu/)

Location: Gainesville, Florida, United States

Funding: Internal and external grants will allow for a full NIH scheduled salary

Start Date: After March 1, 2018

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or a related field

Additional qualifications in one or more of the following: Cell culture, CRISPR/Cas9 screening, molecular biology, Drosophila genetics, computational analysis (e.g. R)

Job Description: The Burman lab studies mitochondrial biology in human cell culture and Drosophila melanogaster in order to understand the molecular etiology of age-related neurodegenerative diseases. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to mine a complete unpublished transcriptomics dataset of adult neurons isolated from a Drosophila model of Parkinson’s disease. This dataset has revealed exciting new interfaces between mitochondrial quality control and other cellular pathways that may underlie the molecular etiology of Parkinson’s disease. The candidate will be able to publish this dataset after follow-up on selected hits in human cell culture (including iPSC-derived neurons) and flies. The candidate will have access to ample resources and mentoring, and gain experience in Drosophila genetics, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing/screening, compound screening, and advanced imaging techniques. The University of Florida is a top 10 public school with abundant resources and a beautiful campus. The successful candidate will take up a position in a brand new lab space at the Institute on Aging in the College of Medicine. They will also have the opportunity to benefit from numerous career and mentoring opportunities available at the University of Florida, as well as enjoy the high standard of living in Gainesville.
