Queens College Library seeks a collaborative, forward-thinking full-time Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Instructor to serve as the Head of Special Collections and Archives, to provide leadership for the Library's Department of Special Collections and Archives at the Benjamin S. Rosenthal Library. The Special Collections unit comprises of historical materials of research value, while the Archives are the inactive college records worthy of preservation. The anticipated starting date is summer or fall 2018.

Reporting to the Chief Librarian, the Head of Special Collections and Archives will envision and plan for the success of the department, including: planning, developing, and enforcing departmental policies and procedures; setting processing priorities, goals and timelines; assessing the archives' backlog; creating communications and marketing plans; managing donor relations (from solicitation to negotiation to managing relationships) and pursuing and managing successful grant and fundraising programs; managing and creating exhibitions; developing a close relationship between the department and the campus, including administrative offices (such as the President's Office, the Development Office, and the Alumni Office), academic departments (such as the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies and the History Department), and cultural partners (such as Queens Memory and the Louis Armstrong House and Museum); embedding archival collections, primary sources and digital scholarship into the college curricula; and establishing procedures for accepting historical records from campus departments. The position will oversee staff who process collections, manage digital presences, and fulfill research requests. This position will also participate in the shared public service activities of providing reference assistance, teaching sessions and courses, and serving as a collection development bibliographer.

The successful candidate will be flexible and collaborative and engaged with emerging issues in archival studies and compliance (including diversity, inclusion, access and ethics). This position will work with Scholarly Communication, Digital Initiatives, Digital Scholarship, and Instruction teams to incorporate the Special Collections and Archives into the public service activities of the library. As a member of the library faculty, this tenure-track position requires scholarship and participation in professional and service activities that enhance the strategic goals of Queens College and Queens College Library's mission.


All titles require a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution. Also required is the ability to work with others for the good of the institution.

For appointment as Assistant a second graduate degree is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

* 3 years' experience working in archives in an academic or research institution

* Second graduate degree in equivalent discipline

* Experience appraising, arranging and processing archival collections and working with DACS, EAD, and other best practice finding aids

* Experience with HTML, CSS, and various CMS platforms (Omeka, WordPress, Collective Access), XML/XSLT for structured metadata

* Demonstrable experience setting forth visions and goals and assessment measures

* Experience in the development and adherence to retention and disaster management policies and the management of professional and support staff

* Experience with curriculum inclusion and teaching with primary source materials and with project management , including but not limited to setting timelines, deliverables, conducting assessments, and reporting

* Successful history of grant writing
