The Department of Space and Plasma Physics (SPP), which is part of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), conducts research related to plasmas in space as well as in the laboratory. We play an active role in a number of international space missions, building state-of-the-art instruments, planning instrument operations, and analyzing data. We participate in the education programme both at the MSc and PhD level, and SPP is part of the KTH Space Centre. SPP receives external funding from several sources; this position is funded by the Swedish Research Council and the Swedish National Space Board.
Project description
SPP was involved in the construction of the Langmuir probe instrument (LAP) on the European Space Agency Rosetta spacecraft, which for the first time followed a comet for an extended time. Rosetta performed measurements close to comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko/67P for over two years.

The LAP instrument was periodically run in a mode, which measured the electric field. The purpose of this project is to analyze the electric field data set, both in statistical and event-based studies to answer a number of scientific questions on the plasma environment close to the comet.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. or be near Ph.D. defense in space physics or a related field. The candidate should have a strong background from at least one of the following areas:
  • analysis and interpretation of space-related data
  • statistical analysis
  • electric field measurements

The successful applicant should have a good research and publication record. Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills are a requirement. We are looking for a strongly motivated person, who is able to work independently. Good command of English orally and in writing is required to present and publish research results.
