Senior Engineering Technologist

Position Summary

The Senior Engineering Technologist position is the fourth level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role. The Senior Engineering Technologist provide technical expertise to solve more complex problems, and leadership skills to manage work in a specific area of expertise, with minimal supervision. Employees in the Senior Engineering Technologist position are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently with increased latitude for un-reviewed work.

The Engineering Technologist will provide technical support for Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems ("CEMS") at the Gibson Generating Station, in addition to the Duke Energy Midwest generation fleet as needed. "CEMS" includes legacy Acid Rain and NSPS CEMS, Continuous Opacity Monitors (COMS), Mercury Continuous Emissions Monitors (MCEMS), Particulate Continuous Emissions Monitors (PMCEMS), and Mercury Sorbent Trap Systems. The successful candidate will be based at Gibson Generating Station.

The priority of this position is to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and regulatory compliance of CEMS equipment operated by Duke Energy. Key tasks will include Gibson Station CEMS data analysis, CEMS equipment work management (new installations, preventive and corrective maintenance), and stack testing coordination. The successful candidate will provide examples of safety awareness, customer service focus, and continuous improvement.


+ Comply with facility air permits and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Maintain knowledge of current environmental laws and regulations

+ Continuously improve (Plan-Do-Check-Adjust) the station's CEMS O&M procedures and Quality Assurance & Quality Control Program

+ Regularly evaluate emissions data and analyzer diagnostic parameters to minimize malfunctions and ensure data quality

+ Collaborate with facility & corporate personnel, contractors, and vendors to improve CEMS functionality & reliability, ensure successful stack testing, and resolve regulatory concerns

+ Coordinate the design, specification, procurement, installation, startup, and certification of new CEMS equipment and affiliated infrastructure

+ Work extended hours as necessary to address emergent workload including evenings, weekends, holidays and 24/7 phone availability for emergency calls

+ Support all Midwest generation facilities, as needed, to ensure CEMS work assignments, goals, and measures are achieved

+ Support and collaborate best practices with all Duke Energy Regions regarding equipment and maintenance programs

+ Travel as needed to meet the needs of other Duke Energy facilities and regions. Position may require up to 10% travel

Working Conditions

+ Office and power plant locations with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust and humidity

+ Must be able to climb ladders, lift up to 50 pounds, work on elevated stack platforms in all types of weather, and work outdoors around energized and operating machinery.

+ Company policy, in regard to safe work practices, must be fully understood and constantly practiced as a condition of employment

Basic/Required Qualifications

+ Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology with a minimum of six (6) years of industry experience, OR an Associate's degree in Engineering Technology with a minimum of eight (8) years of experience, OR a minimum of twelve (12) years of experience in lieu of a degree

Desired Qualifications

+ Demonstrated expertise with CEMS equipment O&M and associated computer interfaces

+ Working knowledge of federal and state regulatory requirements applicable to CEMS at electric generating units, such as 40 CFR Part 60, Part 63, and Part 75

+ Instrumentation, controls, and/or network communications experience in an industrial setting.

+ Working knowledge of power plant operations and maintenance

+ Must be proficient with computer applications such as MS Word and Excel

+ Ability to manage multiple priorities and successfully complete each within specified timeframes

+ Ability to apply basic principles of project management

+ Ability to understand and address customer needs

+ Ability to function within a self-directed work environment and within a high involvement team setting

+ Ability to collaborate successfully with diverse groups working toward a common goal or objective

+ Good written and oral communication skills
