Polytec are recruiting for a Workshop Technician for a company based in central Cambridge. We are looking for a highly skilled and dynamic individual to provide mechanical engineering support to the rest of the team, designing and manufacturing bespoke components and whole pieces of apparatus to allow company research to be conducted.

This is a 6 month contract, which may turn permanent for the right person.

You will be one of the senior members of the Mechanical Workshop, skilled in the use of CNC / manual workshop machinery and other specialist machines, delivering highly specialised technical support to teams in the design, development, manufacture, maintenance and installation of scientific instruments and laboratory equipment.

What You'll Be Doing:

* Manufacture and prepare specialist equipment
* Discuss work requests to ascertain the aims and technical requirements of the request/project, construct, test and modify specialist equipment; provide technical specifications based on rough drawings and sketches or verbal instructions.
* Determine the most appropriate materials, methods and sequence of manufacturing operations with regard to time and available funding.
* Provide specialist technical advice to the team in the design of experiments or equipment. Advise on materials, design and manufacture methods, manufacturing options that could be used to produce experimental apparatus, taking into account time and financial constraints.
* Undertake research into new technologies and manufacture methods. Develop new or improved methods of testing, provide input into writing and updating Standard Operating Procedures.
* Set up equipment. Provide direct assistance and instruction, demonstrate the use of equipment, provide technical guidance.
* Be responsible for maintenance and repair of equipment, liaise with relevant companies and oversee repair or replacement where it is not possible to repair, negotiate with external companies for the hire of sophisticated equipment, explain and supervise its use with all users.
* Deliver design guidance to others and ensure that part(s) can be manufactured in an efficient and effective way, comment on design and offer alternative solutions in cases where manufacturing concerns have been raised.
* Ensure correct and safe operation of the facility/equipment. Instruct on safe working practices, correct and safe use of machinery and equipment, supervise operating machine tools, supervise and advise other technicians using equipment.
* Monitor laboratory resources including, request orders for materials, tools and equipment when required.

What We're Looking For:

* With a suitable qualification equitable to HND/HNC, Level 4/5 Vocational qualification, you will have substantial relevant experience in a similar research or technical environment.
* Ideally you'll have some experience making Scientific Instruments, but you might have be a CNC or manual precision machine operator who has the potential to design and manufacture high precision instruments or parts.
* Practical experience of laboratory technician work    
* Demonstrate Factual and theoretical knowledge within a relevant area
* Knowledge of the relevant regulations and practice
* Good IT skills
* High degree of precision and accuracy
* Excellent communication skills
