Duties

The Sound and Music Technology Manager will direct all aspects of music recording and archiving for the Department of Music. The Manager will prepare and execute a recording plan for each concert/event and manage the transportation and setting up of recording equipment, ensure a high quality recording for each event, and manage the tear down of recording equipment. This position will also edit and master the recordings before making them available to the music department. This position will also manage the music studios, overseeing the scheduling of these spaces and all of the equipment and software, including the maintenance and service for equipment. The Manager will be responsible for music programming with various ensembles (Musica Practica / Elettronica Viva, PCM, Colloquium, Special Events, etc.), collaborating to facilitate performances and secure venues at Penn. This includes grant writing to secure additional funding for invited guests. This position will also liaise with the Music Library regarding the archiving of all recordings. This includes converting the recordings of concerts and events into files that can be archived in the Library, assisting the library staff with appropriate cataloging information and helping to identify priorities for purchasing in the area of recorded music and video. Responsibilities also include liaising with groups around campus to co-sponsor, market, and leverage performance opportunities for students, and liaising with these groups to offer music department expertise to projects of mutual interest and benefit. In addition, the Manager will oversee the Music Computer Lab, managing the equipment and software in the lab, training lab staff in basic operations and competencies for their work, and work with faculty to ensure that the lab continues to meet the pedagogical needs of music department courses. This position will facilitate/develop internships for music majors with local music industry/technology partners, as well as manage and maintain musical equipment and instruments for the department. This position will also take a lead role as liaison for the department website to oversee structural changes and updates in Drupal.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with three to five years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Five to seven years of experience is strongly preferred. Extensive experience recording music performances and working with recording equipment required. Experience editing and mastering the recordings, archiving recordings, and converting recordings into files required. Ideal candidate will have experience managing a music studio and working with music ensembles for events. Experience working in a university setting strongly preferred. Candidate must possess very strong technical skills and be able to manage a computer lab and staff, as well as the equipment and software.
