Archangel Lightworks is a start-up specialised in space laser communications based in Harwell Space Campus, Oxfordshire. Founded in mid-2017, we have secured long-term funding and successfully demonstrated several novel prototypes related to laser transmission and efficient perpendicular solar concentration. Our mission is to make 10x more data download possible to meet the demand from the growing satellites market, especially smallsats, delivering more data from the earth orbit to the ground at higher speed.

Roles & responsibilities

We are passionate about innovation and driven to find new concepts for communications architectures. We are looking for an innovative, ambitious and experienced talent with a strong background in Systems Engineering and technical leadership to drive this forward and augment our rapidly growing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing the architecture, interface definition, and documentation for a new free space optical communication project.

Specific job responsibilities include but not limited to:

- Design and implementation of system models and design optimisation.

-Technical system requirements review/generation, analysis, evaluation, reducing bottlenecks and management at all levels.

- Conducting formal technical reviews of supplier and internal deliverables.

- Ownership, documentation, maintenance of technical budgets (Mass, Power, Link, Errors etc).

- Support and guide junior systems engineers working on the project team

- Supporting systems integration, test and demonstration.

- Management and coordination of engineering team on a technical level.

- Ownership and responsibility over the technical developments of the projects. Contribute to the progress of overall technical strategy.

Interested applicants may also consider starting first as a fixed-term consultant while rolling into a permanent role although this is less preferred.

Required skills/experience:

- Practical experience within the space industry, knowledge of system engineering processes and practices, ideally as lead.

- Experience with communication system architectures, particularly Free Space Optical Communication.

- Experience in generating and analysing technical requirements, and articulating technical arguments to demonstrate compliance to those requirements

- Degree in Engineering, Physics or equivalent technical field, Msc/Phd preferred

- Proficient English, positive attitude, self-driven and interested in working in a start-up environment

- Some working knowledge of free space optics. Lasers, optics, photonics, detectors and FPA's, technology and system trade studies related to lasercom link budgets, atmospheric modeling, acquisition, pointing and tracking, jitter stabilization, communications theory, optical modem designs, and performance testing of optical components, subsystems and complete links.

- Experience with functional, performance testing, verification and validation against requirements.

- Experience in technical assessment and review of systems.

- Experience of the full new product introduction lifecycle (concept definition to product launch)

- Integration of systems, hardware or software with military or civil aircraft.

- Experience working on Cubesat projects, UAV, HAPS projects.
