Position Description

We are currently seeking an experience Group Leader for the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Group for National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II). The Group Leader will oversee mechanical engineers, designers, technicians, and machinists in support of the facility operations, upgrades, and new projects. The NSLS-II ME group includes the Mechanical Utility group, the Survey & Alignment Group, the Design Room, and the Machine Shop. Candidate will work closely with the managers of various groups of the Accelerator Division such as the Accelerator Coordination Group, the Vacuum Group and the Insertion Device group. Position will report to the NSLS-II Accelerator Division Director.

Key responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include establishing and supervising the team that will handle the mechanical engineering support for NSLS-II, including:

+ maintaining and developing new mechanical systems at NSLS-II;

+ completing detailed cost and schedule estimates for the labor and material resources required for the ME projects;

+ carrying out R&D, design, procurement, fabrication, installation and commissioning of the new ME projects;

+ maintaining a current detailed schedule;

+ planning, tracking and executing all procurements;

+ managing configuration management activities;

+ generating performance data and reports;

+ monitoring and reporting on corrective action items.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

+ Requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent plus 15 years of relevant technical and management experience.

+ Must demonstrate a successful track record in the development or operation of an accelerator complex, a strong record of technical accomplishments, and experience in one or more of the following: UHV, precision optics, high precision mechanical design, assembly, measurement, survey, magnets, water cooling, DI water processing, FEA analysis.

+ Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build collegial relationships and collaborate.

+ Strong decision making, problem solving and strategic thinking skills.

+ Knowledge of engineering, design, and drafting practices.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

+ Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

+ Prior project management experience or formal project management training is highly desirable.
