Why Work at BNL?

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science-from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

Organizational Overview

The CFN is a DOE-funded national scientific user facility, offering users a supported research experience with top-caliber scientists and access to state-of-the-art instrumentation. The CFN mission is advancing nanoscience through frontier fundamental research and technique development and is the nexus of a broad collaboration network. Each year, CFN staff members support the research of more than 550 external facility users. The CFN is a collaborative research environment, bringing together scientists with diverse expertise in areas including nanofabrication, electron microscopy, surface science, X-ray nanoscience, and theory & simulation.

Three strategic nanoscience themes underlie the CFN scientific facilities: The CFN fosters research on complex self-assembly processes, for building new ways of constructing Self- Assembled Nanomaterials by Design. The CFN supports state-of-the-art techniques for designing Nano-Architectures to improve the performance of materials. The CFN develops and provides advanced capabilities for studies of Nanomaterials in Operando Conditions, for characterizing materials and reactions at the atomic scale in real-world environments.

Position Description

Position Description

The CFN is seeking an exceptional Assistant or Associate Scientist in the area of X-ray nanoscience. As a CFN scientific staff member, you will carry out independent research made possible by forefront X-ray scattering instruments operated in partnership between CFN and the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) - collaborating with other CFN scientists in areas of mutual interest. You will work with CFN users of these X-ray instruments and other lab-based systems, supporting user experiments and assisting with data analysis and interpretation. You will also develop state-of the-art X-ray techniques for studying soft matter and bionanomaterials. In this position, you will work closely with other X-ray scientists both in the CFN and at NSLS-II.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

As an Assistant/Associate Scientist in the CFN:

+ You will conduct self-directed research in the area of soft, biological, and hybrid nanomaterials using X-ray scattering methods

+ You will develop new X-ray scattering methods and approaches for addressing outstanding nanoscience problems in nanoscience

+ You will support users conducting X-ray scattering experiments at beamlines and assist in analyzing their results

+ You will collaborate with nanoscience colleagues within the CFN and the broader community

+ You will publish your research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals

+ You will be an active CFN community member by participating in scientific and operational activities.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: You are qualified for this Research Associate position if:

+ You have earned a Ph.D. degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a suitable Engineering discipline and have carried out at least two years of research after earning your Ph.D, for example as a postdoctoral researcher, research assistant, industrial scientist, or an equivalent position.

+ You have conducted high-quality research in soft materials, biomaterials, or hybrid nanomaterials.

+ You have expertise in X-ray or neutron scattering methods such as SAXS, WAXS, GISAXS, diffuse scattering, and reflectivity, including experiment design and quantitative data analysis.

+ You have experience in planning X-ray experiments and designing sample-related setups.

+ You collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary teams, in both leadership and supporting roles.

+ You are committed to working safely in the laboratory and fostering an environment of safe-work practices.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:You are well-matched to this position if:

+ You are proficient in scientific programming, developing software, and applying existing software tools for X-ray scattering methods.

+ You have applied scattering theory to the study of nanomaterials.

+ You have experience conducting experiments at a synchrotron and have a working knowledge of beamlines.

+ You communicate effectively, both verbally and through technical writing.

Other Information:

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate scientific level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills he or she brings to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience.
