A Research Fellow/Theme Lead position is available as part of the 10-year, £10M Centre for Functional Materials Design funded by the Leverhulme Trust. You will act as a theme leader for robotics and automation research within the centre, in particular by contributing to our new activity in smart, mobile robots for materials discovery.

You will pro-actively progress the theme of robotics and automation, both using your own initiative and through discussion with the Centre Leadership Team and the broader community of researchers in the Centre. You will report directly to Professor Andrew Cooper FRS, the Director of the Centre. You will be expected to perform research at internationally leading level and to ensure that other researchers within the theme, particularly PhD students, are working toward the objectives of the Centre and communicating across boundaries. For example, we have recently advertised four PhD studentships in the area of robotics to commence in October 2019.

This is not a standard research project, but rather a 10-year research centre with the aim of fundamentally transforming our capability to discover new functional materials. You will be an ambitious scientist motivated to produce step-change advances in new materials through the use of robotics and artificial intelligence. You should have a PhD in Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or Materials Science, with a commitment to developing collaborative research within or across academic networks, external partners and stakeholder groups.

The level of research performed and the experience offered in engaging with senior UK and international partners makes this post suitable for a transition to an independent academic career. We are seeking to recruit a diverse team that will allow the centre to succeed, rather than to fill a narrow list of technical requirements, although for this post, demonstration of experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, software development, or automation and robotics would be strong advantages. The salary banding of the post will be dependent on the skills and experience of the individual appointed. The post is available from 1 February 2019 to 31 January 2024.
