A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, as part of the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight (CSRF). The Centre is a collaboration between Cambridge University, Heriot-Watt University, the University of Westminster and organisations in the freight and logistics sectors, with a major 5-year grant from EPSRC. The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities will be to continue an on-going project with CSRF in regards to assembling and integrating diverse, high-volume systems for real-time traffic monitoring and prediction. The project will involve close collaboration with Highways England and the industrial partners of CSRF (e.g. Turners of Soham and Optrak), and will continue work carried out as Phase 1 of the CSRF. It is envisaged that the first stage of the project will use statistical and machine learning methods on historical data and on existing analysis of journey statistics, to predict congestion to an hour ahead of time.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are a very good first degree in engineering, computer science or a closely related field and have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD degree in an area related to Signal Processing or Machine Learning. It is expected that candidates will have a good knowledge of Python/C++/Matlab.

Experience in either Signal Processing or Machine Learning is necessary. Additionally, applicants should exhibit good oral and written communication skills and have experience both of working in a team and managing their own workload.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £26,243 - £30,395; Research Associate: £32,236 - £39,609

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
