You will join our technical team in the newly-refurbished Undergraduate Chemistry Teaching Laboratories that support the teaching of practical chemistry in the department.

The primary duties will involve providing technical support to facilitate the smooth operation of the teaching laboratory. This typically includes ensuring the work environment is kept clean and tidy, maintaining basic equipment (under clear instruction) and chemical stocks; as well as providing technical support to teaching, outreach and external visitors.

You will demonstrate experience of practical chemistry and a customer focused approach which you will apply to supporting students in their drive to learn practical chemistry. It goes without saying that health and safety is paramount therefore a qualification in Health and Safety is highly desirable to supplement adherence to our strict safety standards and to deliver the best experience for our undergraduate students.

Southampton is one of the best places in the UK for chemistry teaching and research and the Chemistry department has a national and international reputation for excellence. You will be based in one of the two teaching laboratories on the Highfield campus. Our chemistry laboratories are currently undergoing a £12 million refurbishment programme and will reopen at the start of the new academic year. You will then become a member of our successful technician team serving in the new teaching laboratories, helping us deliver excellence in chemistry teaching.

This is a part time fixed term role for 9 months to cover maternity leave. The working pattern will be 20 hours a week, 8am-12pm Monday-Friday.

This post is available from September 2019. For informal enquiries, please contact Colin Flowers (C.M.Flowers@soton.ac.uk), Chemistry, University of Southampton.
