Background

The fidelity of cellular machineries implicated in the recognition and removal of damaged and dysfunctional proteins, such as the ubiquitin-proteasome system or the autophagy-lysosome pathway, plays a crucial role in maintaining protein homeostasis (proteostasis). A decrease in the efficiency of these systems paralleled by an increase in the abundance of misfolded proteins occurs during aging and is a common denominator in neurodegenerative diseases.

Project description

The project is funded by the German Research Foundation and aims to understand how modification of misfolded proteins by ubiquitination and phosphorylation affects protein aggregation and degradation via autophagy or the proteasome.

Methods

  • Advanced cellular imaging, including live cell and super-resolution microscopy
See our website for information on our imaging facility:
    https://www.rub.de/biochem/zellbio/imaging.html.en
  • State-of-the-art techniques in cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, such as ubiquitination assays, aggregation assays, cell death and viability assays, phase separation assays, gene editing, protein biochemistry.

Qualification:

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in cell biology and biochemistry, ideally with experience in one of the following techniques: neuronal cell culture models (primary neurons, iPSC-derived neurons), organotypic slice cultures, or mouse models.

How to apply?

Please send your application (CV, motivation letter, names of at least two references) to konstanze.winklhofer@rub.de

The salary is in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst (TVöD Bund): salary group E13. This position is initially limited to two years.

The Ruhr University Bochum is one of the leading research universities. The university draws its strengths from both the diversity and the proximity of scientific and engineering disciplines on a single, coherent campus. This highly dynamic setting enables students and researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties.

The Ruhr University Bochum has a policy of raising the proportion of women in academic positions and therefore specifically invites the application of qualified female scientists. Under German law disabled applicants with full qualifications are to be preferred.
