Applicants are invited to apply for a Teaching position in the Cardiff School of Engineering, within the Department of Architectural, Civil and Environmental Engineering. You will need to deliver high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.  You will pursue excellence in teaching and inspire others to do the same.

This position is part time (17.5 hours per week) and is fixed term until 31st May 2020.
 
Salary: £33,797 - £40,322 per annum, pro rata for hours worked (Grade 6)

Job Description:
1. Design teaching programmes for courses.  Includes identifying learning objectives and selecting appropriate curricula; selecting teaching methods, resources and reading; determining, designing and producing study material; planning course delivery and planning for contingencies such as slower/faster progress than anticipated.

2. Deliver teaching courses.  Includes preparing teaching material, communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking; observing and reacting to student interventions; responding to questions outside class times and to contingencies in course delivery.

3. Co-ordinate team teaching, including liaison with other academics and/or postgraduate assistants, to ensure the course complements other courses taken by students; collaborate with colleagues on course development and curriculum changes.

4. Carry out assessment for courses.  Includes designing assessment instruments and criteria; marking assessments, ensuring adequate moderation; providing written/oral feedback; judging whether student circumstances should be taken into consideration in the assessment; and collating and providing final assessments of students.

5. Supervise undergraduate and possibly Masters projects.

6. Carry out course evaluation, including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery; and implementing ideas for improving own performance.

7. Carry out teaching related administrative duties as required.

8. Carry out a significant administrative role within the department, or undertake another significant activity to contribute to the overall management of the department, as required;

9. Carry out pastoral role for students such as acting as Personal Tutor. If necessary refer them to the appropriate authority for guidance.

Qualifications and Education


1.      Postgraduate degree at PhD level (or close to completion) in Civil Engineering, or equivalent, or relevant industrial experience
 
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

2.      Evidence of the ability to act as a definitive source of expertise in the area of building information modelling, and to demonstrate continuous specialist development
3.      Effective teaching skills with the ability to deliver high-quality lectures and tutorials, develop own teaching materials and methods and meet defined learning objectives
4.      Experience of teaching at undergraduate / postgraduate level in a variety of settings
5.      Ability to engage in the research programme of one or more of the academic staff within the BRE Trust Centre for Sustainable Engineering
 
Communication and Team Working

6.     Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly and confidently to others using a range of media
7.      Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to make appropriate decisions on academic content of courses

8.      Proven ability to demonstrate creativity and innovation within work
9.      Evidence of ability to work under pressure and to strict timescales

Desirable Criteria
 
1.      Relevant teaching qualification(s), such as a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (PGCHE)
