Horticultural Technician/Assistant Plant Propagator. York About the role This job is within the Plant Protection Programme The Plant Protection Programme delivers plant health testing and related research to UK government, levy boards, overseas governments and commercial clients. The work of the Programme includes pathogen diagnosis and testing, diagnostic development, and research in applied pathology and the management of invertebrate pests. The job will entail propagating and maintaining a wide variety of plants in conjunction with maintaining the facilities and adhering to the required standards. What you will do: * Water and feed plants on a daily basis; * Propagate and prune; * Follow a production schedule; * Control plant pest and diseases; * Maintain external plots; * Maintain the correct environmental conditions (Synopta); * Book facilities using an online system; * Maintain the facilities to the required standards (Plant Health Quarantine Licence); * Undertake Quarantine Drainage System checks; * Collect and autoclave waste; * Work overtime (contractual requirement to work at weekends and Bank Holidays as part of a rota). Your experience will include: * Candidates should have 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above (including English and Maths or Science) or equivalent experience. * Proven horticultural experience; hold a practical horticultural qualification; hold chemical spraying certificates (PA1 and PA6) and have a UK driving licence. * Our ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills (written and verbal); they will be able to work in an organised manner to deliver the work as efficiently as possible to meet deadlines whilst maintaining high standards. * Desirable skills and experience: good IT skills particularly using Microsoft applications (Word, Excel and Outlook); experience of working to accredited standards such as ISO 17025, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and GLP; experience of updating COSHH and General Risk Assessments; experience of using farm machinery and vehicles.
