We are seeking a highly motivated and productive Research Scientist to join the Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmunity (RIA) research group in Cambridge UK. The successful candidate will work within the Respiratory team to conduct experiments to help explore novel mechanisms and pathways involved in airway remodelling and repair in chronic lung disease.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As part of your role, you will utilise biological assays with human primary cells as well as animal models to explore novel mechanisms and pathways involved in airway repair and remodelling in chronic lung diseases such as COPD. You will be able to work independently as well collaboratively within a team, supporting both basic research as well as pipeline projects as required.

This is an exciting role with the ultimate goal of identifying and championing novel therapeutic targets and approaches to modulating respiratory disease in order to make world-leading therapeutics.

Essential Requirements

  • PhD in a biological science or BSc/MSc + industry or academic working experience
  • An interest in chronic lung diseases, for example COPD, asthma or IPF
  • Hands-on experience working with animal models, both with in vivo techniques as well as ex vivo processing and analysis of samples. Expertise with in vivo models of lung repair/remodelling is an advantage.
  • Strong hands-on experience with the isolation of primary cells from tissue/blood and primary cell culture
  • Expertise in the evaluation of cellular responses by various means, for example multi-colour flow cytometry, Luminex, ELISA, western blotting, qPCR, confocal microscopy, gene editing and/or other similar technologies
  • Highly organized and self-motivated, with a proven ability to work as part of a team
  • Proficient in the design, planning and execution of experiments, interpretation of data and optimisation of assays
  • Ability to independently lead own scientific research
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Desirable Requirements

Experience with 1 or more of the following areas would be advantageous but is not a requirement

  • Experience working with lung epithelial cells, stem cells and/or iPS cells
  • Expertise in bioinformatics or analysis of large datasets
