Senior Scientist/Manager - Protein Expression

As the Senior Scientist/Manager you will be part of a team within the Biopharmaceutical Development department, responsible for generating preclinical grade recombinant proteins to support internal projects at all stages of Drug Discovery as well as developing new technologies around rapid protein expression and gene therapy platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities

You will be responsible and accountabl​e for relevant key core activities within the team, as well as relevant cross-functional activities and will play an important role in managing, coordinating and maintaining the supply of preclinical grade material using in-house rapid protein expression strategies. In order to do this you will maintain an awareness of the overall aim of team and other relevant groups and will participate on appropriate drug development and research project teams across the global organisation.

You will be asked to contribute to the scientific strategy and direction of technology development within the group as well as coordinating and leading relevant technology development projects and will be actively involved in the development and implementation of new novel technologies. Including investigating possible implementation of new protein expression strategies where necessary by designing and conducting experiments according to project requirements. You will achieve this by liaising with other groups in Cambridge and globally to apply new developments to future projects, both with the expression technology but also with novel protein product formats.

You will use your expertise to coordinate all research support requirements for relevant groups within R & D. Liaising with the teams involved to understand their requirements, schedule accordingly and manage the support activities, processes as well as the production and scheduling of preclinical grade material requests to avoid unnecessary project delays. You will manage the cell culture and scale up activities including continuous process improvement within the team. You will perform continuous review of current processes, troubleshooting and ensuring efficiency and capacity is maximized.

Essential requirements

  • PhD in Life Sciences or equivalent
  • Expertise in cell culture, cell biology, molecular biology and in depth experience in protein expression (transient and stable expression platforms) preferably gained in an industrial environment.
  • In depth knowledge and experience in AAV research and production
  • Knowledge and experience in bioreactor cell culture scale up processes.
  • Knowledge and experience of analytical techniques, e.g. SDS PAGE, western blotting.
  • Experience in managing and supervision of core activities.
  • Extensive experience in managing cell culture and protein expression activities from eukaryotic cells.

Desirable requirements

  • Familiarity with alternative expression systems including microbial expression systems.
  • In depth knowledge and experience in Bioreactor scale-up
  • Initiative, proactive, good communicator, good team player, excellent scientific methodology.
  • High level of attention to detail, organisational and planning skills
  • Interest in continuous improvement of the technology.
