Physician (General Surgeon)

Summary

General Surgery is a "discipline having a central core of knowledge embracing anatomy, physiology, metabolism, immunology, nutrition, pathology, wound healing, shock and resuscitation of intensive care and neoplasia, which are common to all surgical specialties" according to the American Board of Surgery.

Responsibilities

The general surgeon is and individual who has specialize knowledge and skills relating to the diagnosis, preoperative, operative and post operative management in the following areas: alimentary tract abdomen and its contents breasts, skin, and soft tissue head and neck (including trauma, vascular, endocrine, congital and oncological disorders-particularly tumor of the skin, salivary glands, thyroid, parathyroid, and the oral cavity ) vascular systems, (excluding the intracranial vessels, the heart, and those vessels intrinsic and immediately adjacent thereto) endocrine system surgical oncology (including coordinated multimodality management of the cancer patient by screening, surveillance, surgical adjunctive therapy, rehabilitation and follow-up) Management of trauma (including musculoskeletal, hand and head injuries. The responsibility for all phase of care of the injured patient is and essential component of general surgery. Responsibilities of the General Surgeon General surgeons provide or assist residents with the process of preoperative evaluation of each patient scheduled for elective or emergency surgery. The General Surgeon is responsible for providing the patient with risks, benefits and alternative treatments and securing though informed consent of the patient/family needed before conducting invasive procedures. He/She evaluates the patients, families, co-workers and other health care professionals treating them with respect and dignity. General Surgeons provide inpatient and outpatient consultation and preoperative patient and OR evaluations. During on-call hours, be available for consultation and return electronic pages and/or telephone call s promptly. Participates in various hospital committees, departmental and hospital in-service programs and acquire CME's as required. Work effectively with patients, families, co-workers and other health care professionals treating them with respect and dignity. Complies with information security policy and procedures. The general surgeon provides patient care which is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and chronological maturation needs of the adult and/or geriatric patient. The surgeon must demonstrate the knowledge of skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients serve within the Surgical Service. The individual must demonstrative knowledge of the changes associated with aging and possess the agility to provide care based upon age related factors as specifies on the competence assessment checklist. He/She is responsible for regular post operative follow-up, patient teaching and wound care upon discharge. Write/dictates appropriate operative notes and discharge orders in the chart in a timely manner. Work Schedule: Weekends and holidays required; call is required

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
