RN Lactation Consultant - Postpartum Care Center

**Providence is calling a RN Lactation Consultant - Postpartum Care Center (0.6 FTE, Days) to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, OR.**

**This position will work weekend shifts working hours 8:45am - 5:15pm.**

_We are seeking a RN Lactation Consultant - Postpartum Care Center who will be accountable for the direct and indirect care for infants and women both in the inpatient or outpatient clinic setting. Responsible to provide postpartum maternal and neonatal assessments. Develops feeding plans to address the nutritional needs of the infant that may include but is not limited to breastfeeding support, breast pumping support, and supplementation as appropriate. Provides lactation support and education to mothers as directed by referral or in the clinic setting after discharge._

**In this position you will have the following responsibilities:** :

+ IN-PATIENT NURSE:

+ In-patient nurse provides consultations to mothers and neonates as directed by referral. Consultations may include but are not limited to:

+ Basic breastfeeding guidance appropriate for the inpatient setting.

+ Breast pump usage and maintenance, education and guidance as appropriate.

+ Supplementation education and guidance as appropriate.

+ Develop a comprehensive feeding plan consistent with current evidence based practice as appropriate.

+ Provide treatment and develops treatment plans for maternal issues related to the delivery site, breasts and nipples as needed.

+ Build rapport with patient and provides reassurance.

+ Communicate concerns regarding patient status to physician or provider as clinically appropriate. Following hospital guidelines ensures that appropriate follow-up care is arranged.

+ Maintain knowledge of available community resources and refers patients as appropriate.

+ Initiate and complete patient documentation in EPIC immediately following the consultation or at least by the end of the daily shift.

+ Practice good stewardship of time and sees an appropriate number of referred patients per day.

+ Participate in the development of clinical policies, procedures, and standards of care as requested.

+ Attend and participate in staff meetings and other meetings as requested.

+ Maintain knowledge of advances in nursing and healthcare practices. Maintain skills competency as evidenced by completion of annually skills checklist. Completes self-evaluation for the annual review process.

+ Function as an effective member of a team assisting others whenever possible. Display effective problem solving techniques. Serve as a resource for other staff.

+ Return patient and provider phone calls as clinically appropriate. Return team members' pages within the hour. Check voice and e-mail message daily.

+ Practice within the scope of the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) guidelines.

+ OUT-PATIENT NURSE

+ Out-patient nurse cares for postpartum mothers and newborns. Responsibilities include:

+ Provide a complete nursing assessment of the mother and infant (including age specific growth and development), per clinic guidelines.

+ Develop or continue treatment plans for maternal issues related to the delivery site, breasts and nipples as needed.

+ Develop, modify, or continue inpatient breastfeeding, breast pumping, supplementation and feeding plan consistent with current evidence based practice as appropriate.

+ Initiate and complete documentation of the visit in EPIC before the end of the daily shift.

+ Communicate concerns regarding patient status to physician or provider as clinically appropriate. Following clinic guidelines ensures that appropriate follow-up care is arranged.

+ Maintain knowledge of available community resources and refers patients as appropriate.

+ Practice good stewardship of time and per clinic guidelines daily sees designated the number of patients.

+ Out-patient nurse provides follow-up lactation consultations in the clinic for mothers and infants as needed. Responsibilities include:

+ Provide detailed breastfeeding/breast pumping guidance and hands on training of technique.

+ Provide continuing treatment and develop treatment plans for maternal issues related to the delivery site, breasts and nipples as needed.

+ Evaluate the infant and feeding plan. Make modifications to plan consistent with current evidence based practice as appropriate to ensure optimal nutrition of infant.

+ Initiate and complete documentation of the visit in EPIC before the end of the daily shift.

+ Communicate concerns regarding patient status to physician or provider as clinically appropriate. Per clinic guidelines ensures that appropriate follow-up care is arranged.

+ Return patient and provider phone calls as clinically appropriate. Return team members' pages within the hour. Check voice and e-mail message daily.

+ Participate in the development of clinical policies, procedures, and standards of care as requested.

+ Attend and participate in all staff meetings and other meetings as requested.

+ Function as an effective member of a team assisting others whenever possible. Display effective problem solving techniques. Promote positive public relations between patients, the hospital, and community. Serve as a resource for other staff.

+ Maintain knowledge of advances in nursing and healthcare practices. Maintain skills competency as evidenced by completion of annually skills checklist. Completes self-evaluation for the annual review process. Serve as a link between education and practice with nursing schools and students.

+ Clean and restock exam rooms.

+ Practice within the scope of the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) guidelines.

**Qualifications:**

**Required qualifications for this position include:**

+ Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

+ Successful completion of an accredited college level lactation certification program that includes 300 hours or more of precepted clinical lactation experience may be substituted for years of prior experience

+ International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

+ Unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License

+ Infant and adult Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers

+ 3 years Experience providing lactation care in a Labor and Delivery, Post Partum, or NICU department or in an outpatient mother baby clinical setting
