Abstract

With the rapid rise in our knowledge about the structural and functional properties of neuronal microcircuits and the exponentially increasing power of computers, it has become possible to closely integrate experimental findings with large-scale, anatomically and biophysically realistic computational simulations of control and epileptic neuronal networks with unprecedented precision and predictive power. In this paper, we discuss the biological basis of model development, and outline specific applications, including exciting new computational and experimental results concerning the roles of aberrant hyperconnected hub-like neurons in seizures. © Wiley Periodicals, Inc. © 2011 International League Against Epilepsy.
