The literature on criminal recidivism is reviewed to determine if any trends exist in the efficacy of various forms of intervention for rehabilitation of offenders. For adults, it is shown that supervision after release from confinement is a critical component of correctional efforts. Early release, work release, & special parole programs do not improve results. Promising results are found in the form of short-term, resource-oriented programs such as financial aid & job placement, as well as social work interventions. Overall, few innovative strategies effectively lower recidivism among juvenile offenders. Early & firm intervention followed by intensive supervision produce the best results. 22 References. F.
