Abstract

In Firing Back, a collection of Pierre Bourdieu’s most recent speeches, the late French intellectual argues for a stance that affirms culture and opposes globalization. He pleads with his audiences to recognize and address the “invisible government” that is controlled by multinational corporations. Despite his obvious affinities for left politics, Bourdieu keeps his distance from affirming Marxism. The result is that he often seems to miss the very contradictions within neoliberal strategies that might be used by an oppositional stance to dismantle them. © 2007, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
